The Gorongosa Coffee Story
What if with every sip of coffee, you were making a difference?
100% of the profits from our specialty roasts support Gorongosa National Park in Mozambique and the people who call it home.
Gorongosa National Park
Our coffee grows in the rainforests of Mount Gorongosa in Mozambique’s Gorongosa National Park, one of the most biodiverse places on Earth. The park is a unique experiment in wildlife conservation that puts people’s lives first, supporting biodiversity while providing jobs, healthcare, and education. Gorongosa embodies the vision we all share: that humans and the environment can thrive together.
The greatest hope for our planet is for humans to live in harmony with nature. Join us in that movement.
Gorongosa was not always a story of optimism and hope. Mount Gorongosa lies in the heart of central Mozambique, a region exploited during decades of colonial rule, culminating in a 17-year civil war. The conflict left over a million people dead, and devastated the greater Gorongosa ecosystem. The savanna emerged from the war nearly empty; almost all of its wildlife was lost.
But that’s not where the story ends. Sixteen years after the civil war, the government of Mozambique and the Carr Foundation partnered to restore Gorongosa National Park. What emerged was the Gorongosa Project, a groundbreaking model for conservation that brings together the needs of the park’s wildlife and its people. Since the project’s inception, economic security and human welfare have begun to rebound, and wildlife populations have soared.
In 2011, the Gorongosa Project worked with a group of local farmers to plant coffee seedlings on Mount Gorongosa. At first, 15,000 seedlings were planted alongside native trees to support rainforest reforestation efforts. Today, Mount Gorongosa’s people are planting around 200,000 coffee trees per year, and 50,000 rainforest trees alongside them.
In communities of primarily subsistence farmers, Gorongosa Coffee enables local workers to put food on their tables and send their children to school - all while supporting their surrounding ecosystem.
100% of our profits go back to Gorongosa National Park and its people. We are a purpose-driven eco-enterprise and our sole shareholder is the non-profit trust that funds the park. That means that every bag of coffee directly supports our mission to serve Gorongosa National Park and the communities that surround it.
When you drink Gorongosa Coffee, you become part of our story. You contribute to a more equitable and sustainable world in which farmers are fairly compensated, young women have opportunities for higher education, and families have access to healthcare. You help us create a world where both people and the planet thrive together.
